AFTERMARKET REVIEW

Eduard Bf 109G-10 Engine Set for the Eduard Kit
1:48 Scale

vol_2_image

The Bf 109G-10 emerged in December 1944 with the nickname "bastard aircraft of the Erla factory."  It was a standard new-build Bf 109G airframe paired with the DB 605 D-2 engine which was destined for the Bf 109K.  The engines were ready but the production of the K-model airframes was not quite there.  So instead of letting good engines just sit around, they were installed in these -G model 109s.  The DB-605 D-2 engine mounts and supercharger were slightly larger than the G-6, and hence, it required a slightly enlarged and streamlined engine cowling.

We’ve had a look at Eduard’s recent 1:48 scale Bf 109G-10 kits, and we really like them (see them and related reviews HERE http://www.detailandscale.com/scale_model_kit_reviews.html.  This Brassin set is designed to fit into the Eduard 109G-10s.

If you read these reviews regularly, you know that your reviewer is quite enamored with the exceptional casting seen in the Brassin products.  In this DB 605 engine set for the Bf 109G-10, I think Eduard has provided yet another absolute gem.  The casting is exquisite and technically flawless.  The elegant complexity of this set emerges from the 68 cast resin parts and the 45 unpainted photoetched metal parts. There’s also a small decal sheet that provides engine markings.  It’s all far more involved than any single casting could ever accomplish.  If you’re like me and enjoy resin detail sets, this is what aftermarket detail sets are all about.

The set features the inline engine, engine mounts, firewall, cowling, supercharger, fuel injector pumps, magnetos, gear boxes, oil filters, scavenger oil pumps, pipes, hoses, wires – everything.  Other details in this Brassin offering include the nose-mounted machine guns, ammo chutes, and gorgeously cast engine access panels with amazing detail, both inside and out.  The only potential drawback is that this set is not a “drop-in” detail set, and there’s some surgery needed to remove the engine cowling and a few other parts of the kit.

I really scrutinized my own references and recent photos I shot of the engine in the Bf 109G-10 on display at the National Museum of the United States Air Force.  I could not find any perceptible discrepancies or inaccuracies.  The Daimler-Benz 605-series engine is beautifully represented here.

We extend our sincere thanks to Eduard for the review sample. You can visit them on the web at http://www.eduard.com and on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/EduardCompany/
