AFTERMARKET REVIEW

Eduard BIG SIN ADVANCED Set for the Eduard Tempest Mk. V Kit -- 1:48 Scale

vol_2_image

Eduard’s new-tool Tempest Mk. V kits (including their most recent release, the Royal Class edition, reviewed HERE) represent the best Tempest Mk. Vs on the market today.  Eduard has also released a range of photoetched metal and cast resin detail sets for their Tempest Mk. Vs.  Some of these sets were bundled in their Tempest Mk. V Essential Detail Set (again, reviewed HERE).  In this review, we examine their Tempest Mk. V Advanced Detail Set.

This set combines (again, at a savings for the customer) the Eduard Brassin sets # 648417 (Tempest Mk. V Engine), # 648419 (Tempest Mk. V Gun Bays), # 648446 (Tempest Undercarriage Legs BRONZE), and #648450 (R-3 60lb. Rockets).

Eduard Brassin #648417 Tempest Mk. V Engine:  This set contains a complete Napier Sabre engine, and the casting is perhaps among the best that I’ve ever seen from Eduard.  The engine is the heart and soul of this BIG SIN set.  It contains 78 perfectly cast resin parts, from the engine itself to the engine frame, pumps, filters, pipes, engine access panels, the air intake, and the engine compartment firewall.  The detail on all the parts is simply exquisite.  Another eight photoetched metal parts on one fret round out this set.  What you’ve got here is relatively stunning.  You have to cut off the kit’s entire engine cowling and replace it with these items.  The fidelity of detail is eye-watering and the combination of parts build into the most impressive replica of the Napier Sabre Engine in any scale.  The single-piece radiator intake is very impressive while the detail on the cast resin engine cowling panels (both inside and out) have no rival anywhere.  It’s awesome work.

Eduard Brassin # 648419 Tempest Mk. V Gun Bays:  This set gives the scale modeler the opportunity to open up their Tempest Mk. V Gun bays.  It consists of 24 cast resin parts and 26 photoetched parts on one fret to encompass the left and right wing gun bays.  Again, these parts are beautifully cast with tons of detail. Most of the time, I would argue for gun belts to be best represented by PE metal parts, but the casting here is so good that it is unassailable.  You can’t go wrong.  Here, you get resin and PE parts for the bays, guns, bay doors, and more.  The fidelity of the cast details on the guns, gun bay bulkheads, the doors (both their external and internal surfaces) are exceptional.

Eduard Brassin # 648446 Tempest Undercarriage Legs BRONZE:  This set provides two cast brass replacement main landing gear for the kit’s polystyrene parts along with six cast resin main gear well doors.  Again, the detail is excellent, and represent a significant step above the kit parts.  The brass gear are far more rigid and stronger than the kit parts, feature details that are more crisp in appearance, and the cast resin gear doors are gorgeous and rich with detail, inside and out.

The last item in this set is Eduard Brassin #648450 - RP-3 60lb. Rockets.  Here, you will find eight single-piece RP-3 rockets, eight launch rails, and 86 photoetched metal parts on one unpainted fret.  There’s also a decal sheet for all the rocket markings.

The detail on both the rockets and the rails is mostly flawless.  They are significantly better than the rockets in the kit (which themselves are nicely done).  The photoetched metal parts will also really nicely represent the mounting latches and electrical ignition leads.  In my sample, a few of the RP-3 rocket tube bodies were just a little bit warped.  This is not unexpected with such fine and thin resin parts.  It’s almost unavoidable in the manufacturing process of casting such thin and fine cylindrical shapes.  Before we start talking about breaking out a hairdryer or reshaping them in hot water:  the shape deviations here are very minor and these resin rocket bodies possess very low tensile strength.  Just gluing them to their pylons should, quite literally, set them straight.

At the end of the day, the Eduard BIG SIN Tempest Mk. V Advanced set is a detail-oriented modelers dream.  Indeed, it’s expensive, but its value and quality are proportionate to the price, at least in my opinion.  It’s still cheaper than buying these individually.  I’ve got two Eduard Tempest builds planned (at some point!) and one will incorporate both the aforementioned Essential BIG SIN set along with this Advanced set as well.  Their detail potential, either individually or together, is outstanding.
