AFTERMARKET REVIEW

Eduard F-14 Placards (for the Tamiya Kit) -- 1:32 Scale

vol_2_image

Despite (and in some ways, in spite of) the emergence of the Trumpeter F-14 kits in 1:32 scale, the venerable Tamiya Tomcat can still be built into a very good replica of the F-14A.  In this re-release, Eduard provides some great details for Tamiya’s big Tomcat in the form of data placards (and some other details, too).

This set contains 123 pre-painted photoetched metal parts.  It provides a diverse range of placards for the F-14’s nose gear, nose gear well, main landing gear, main landing gear wells, AWG-9 radar and its forward bulkhead, and both ejection seats.  These placards capture a really significant range of subtle and important details in these areas in the jet, from the data markings on the main mounts to the extensive markings on the GRU-7 ejection seats.  As an ejection seat geek, I find the latter details to be very useful and particularly important.  Also, this set provides the individual rows of circuit breaker panels for the RIO.  It’s a nice touch indeed.

This set is hugely useful.  I’ve got three observations.  First, while sized for the Tamiya kit, most of these can be reasonably used with the Trumpeter or Revell F-14A kits without too much peril.  Second, some of these detail parts are incredibly small.  Take extensive care in handling them.  Third, according to the instructions, the “PILOT” placard marking is to be used for both ejection seats, and you indeed get four of these parts. In the 1:1 scale F-14A, the RIO’s seat was typically labeled “M.C.O.”  It’s a tiny error and nothing to get too concerned about.  The lettering on the part is very, very fine and hard to read to begin with, though this technically does represent an error.

This PE detail set will bring some very nice additional details to your Tamiya F-14A.  Sincere thanks are owed to Eduard for the review sample.  You can visit them on the web at http://www.eduard.com and on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/EduardCompany
