AFTERMARKET REVIEW

E-Z Rigging by Mark's Models and Toys
SOC-1/2/3 Seagull (for Hasegawa) -- 1:72 Scale

The Curtiss SOC Seagull was the U.S. Navy’s battleship- and cruiser-based observation and scout plane for the mid- to late 1930s.  Its seaplane configuration was optimized to being launched by catapult and recovered from a water landing.  When ashore, the float was replaced by interchangeable fixed landing gear.  The OS2U Kingfisher replaced it in 1941, but the venerable Seagull continued on as a trainer until 1945.

There are not too many SOC Seagull kits out there in any scale, which is unfortunate given the importance of this airplane in the interwar period and during WWII for its contribution to aircrew training.  The best and most widely produced Seagull is Hasegawa’s 1:72 scale injection-molded kit whose original tooling goes back to 1969.

This photoetched metal set by Mark’s Models and Toys (the same folks behind Starfighter Decals) comes on one fret to provide a complete set of flying wires for the Hasegawa Seagull.  They are premeasured and are designed to fit right into place.  Another advantage is since U.S. aircraft used flat flying wires, photoetched metal parts are perfect to correctly represent their shape and cross-section.  This set also includes a few photoetched parts for the radio antenna mast, bomb racks, and elevator hinges.

Overall, this set is very well made and should be very easy to use.  It is highly recommended for your build of the Hasegawa Seagull and will add important detail and accuracy.  Many thanks to Mark’s Models and Toys for the review sample. You can find on the web and purchase this detail set at http://www.starfighter-decals.com/index.html
