CMK Resin Detail Sets for the ICM Fw 189A-1/2
1:72 Scale

vol_2_image

The Focke Wulf Fw 189 was one of the more distinctive aircraft of World War II.  This tactical reconnaissance aircraft featured a central cockpit gondola, twin tail booms, and two engines.  It first flew in 1938 and was produced until mid-1944, seeing most of its combat over the Eastern Front.

Overall, it was considered to have been a very successful design.  The German Army called it their Fliegende Auge, or Flying Eye.  Its greenhouse-like canopy provided excellent visibility. While the plane might look perhaps a bit fragile, the design was rugged and capable of taking a lot of punishment.  While outgunned by many Soviet fighters of the day, it was extremely agile, escaping potentially fatal engagements by outmaneuvering their opponents.

There are a good number of kits of the Fw 189, and in 1:72 scale, ICM has released (so far) four Fw 189s since 2016 (they have done 1:48 scale versions, too).  There’s a good argument that these represent the best Fw 189s in this scale.  CMK also offers some detail sets to add even more detail and quality to the ICM kit.  Here, we take a look at three of them.

CMK 7377: Fw 189A-2 Cockpit Set.  The kit cockpit is good, but the fidelity of detail in this cast resin set is far superior.  This set contains 21 resin parts that are intended as a complete resin replacement for the cockpit.  It includes the cockpit floor, sidewalls, instrument panel, control column, rudder pedals, and the pilot and observer seats.  Regarding the latter, I normally would always opt for the use of photoetched metal parts for shoulder harnesses and lap belts, but here, they are so finely cast that I think these work just fine.  Casting quality is excellent, replete with detail and there are no casting defects to be seen.  There’s also a small acetate sheet for the instrument panel dial faces.

CMK 7377: Fw 189A-1/2 Engine Set.  The Fw 189 was powered by two Argus As 410 in-line powerplants, and this set provides one complete engine.  The parts breakdown and casting is thoughtfully executed.  The engine block is a single piece, as are each of the individual cylinder heads.  Other parts provided here include the engine mounts, engine face and firewall, and separate upper, left, and right engine access panels.  All that’s missing here is engine wiring and plumbing, but I think the expectation is for the scale modeler to add those details as they wish.  Again, casting quality is top notch.

CMK 7377: Fw 189A-1/2 Undercarriage Bays Set.  This set provides very nicely detailed left and right main landing gear wells.  Well roofs and walls are separate parts, and this set replaces what’s in the kit.  These parts feature all the structural members inside the gear wells quite nicely, but as with the engine set, you will need to add any and all wiring and plumbing as desired.

Overall, these are great resin detail sets.  Indivdually, they will add some great touches and a depth of detail beyond what the injection-molded ICM kit can provide.  Used together, you’ll have one really nice super-detailed Fliegende Auge to be sure.
