CMK Resin Detail Sets for the 1:72 scale Airfix B-17G Flying Fortress

vol_2_image

From what I’ve seen of it, the Airfix B-17G is the best Flying Fortress in 1:72 scale, arguably edging out the Revell of Germany kit in that scale.  For scale modelers interested in adding even more detail to their Airfix B-17G, CMK offers a number of cast resin detail sets.  Here, we take a look at three of them.

First up:  the bomb bay set.  The Airfix kit contains parts for the B-17G’s internal bomb bay, but this cast resin set far outstrips the plastic parts in the kit.  It contains 12 parts (front and rear compartment bulkheads, bomb racks, bomb bay doors, internal roof and walls, and the center gangplank walkway.  The casting is flawless and the detail is excellent.  All that’s missing are a few of the control cables and other wiring details, but that best left to the builder to add, at least in my opinion.  This set is designed as a “drop-in” item to be directly placed into the kit without having to modify or cut anything.  One drawback, though: the bulkhead doors leading forward to the cockpit or aft to the radio operator’s room are molded in the closed position. If you want to open them up, then get out your finest razor saw and start cutting.

Second, let’s look at the Bomb Aimer’s Station set, which could have been better named as includes both the bombardier and the navigator’s stations.  Nine resin parts are included here, and include a new floor and aft bulkhead, the Norden bombsight, the bombardier’s seat, the navigator’s table, and associated gear.  Again, the detail is impressive and the casting is great.  It should also fit right into the nose of the Airfix Flying Fortress without having to modify the kit in any way.  One small potential oversight - the set has the seat for the bombardier, but not for the navigator.  Perhaps the kit part just can’t be beat.

Third, we turn to the B-17G port side engine set.  The engines on the B-17 were “handed” or otherwise sided.  This set lets you represent either the Number 1 or the Number 2 engine.  And especially for 1:72 scale, this looks like it will build into a really nice rendition of the Pratt & Whitney R1820.  The parts breakdown is extensive with 41 resin parts and 10 photoetched metal parts.  Each cylinder head is a separate part as are the ignition ring, all the exhaust pipes, and the four individual engine cowling sections and cowl flaps.  The photoetched metal fret provides the cylinder head caps and an exquisitely made single-piece engine wiring set.  It’s quite impressive.  Unfortunately for me, one of the cowl flaps was broken off.  Thin resin is delicate, and it happens.  Fortunately, it's an easy fix, and can be replaced by some very thin plastic sheet once the ragged edges of the broken resin are cleared up and squared off with a sharp knife.

Sincere thanks are owed to Special Hobby/CMK for the review sample.  You can visit them on the web at http://www.specialhobby.info/ and on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/specialhobby
