CMK Detail Sets for the Hasegawa J2M3 Raiden
1:72 Scale

The J2M3 Raiden (Allied codename: Jack) was a single-engine land-based fighter flown by the Imperial Japanese Navy during World War II.  While rather stubby in appearance, it was a reasonably fast and well-armed interceptor.  J2M3s were primarily used to defend the airspace over the Home Islands against B-29 raids but it had a lot of difficulty doing so due to the lack of turbocharger.  One of the last engagements of the war saw Raidens engaged with Hellcats a mere two hours before the cease-fire was announced.  Hasegawa does a nice kit of the Raiden in 1:72 scale, and these three sets are designed to complement that kit.

CMK #7394- J2M3 Control Surfaces:  the Hasegawa J2M3 control surfaces are molded integrally into the airframe.  If you’re like me and often prefer to have separate control surfaces (to me, it’s a more interesting visual presentation for most aircraft), this set will take you far with your Raiden.  Following a little razor-saw surgery to remove the kit’s rudder and ailerons and subsequent clean-up, these seven resin parts are designed to drop straight in.  The set also provides a new set of cast resin horizontal stabilizers with separate elevators designed to simply replace the kit parts.

CMK #7395- J2M3 Wing Flaps:  this set provides cast resin landing flaps.  There are four parts:  two upper wing sections and the dropped flaps themselves.  Here, you’ll also have a little surgery to perform to remove part of the upper wing.  That will allow you to work in the upper wing sections that provide really nice detail to the underside of the upper wing, which is visible when the flaps themselves are dropped.  The flaps themselves are nice and simple:  drop-in and glue-in-place.  Then you’re done.

CMK #7396- J2M3 Wheel Wells and Covers:  Hasegawa’s 1:72 scale J2M3 has is strengths and weaknesses, and the gear wells could be considered an under-detailed area of the kit.  Here, the 10 parts in this set provide a complete left and right main gear well, the gear well doors, and the attachment points for the doors to the main landing gear struts.  They are a major improvement over the kit parts.

The overall quality of these three sets are excellent.  Casting is flawless (no defects, warping, or other problems).  Panel lines are nicely done where they are called for and they are delicately recessed.  Used either alone or in combination, these sets will bring some nice touches to the 1:72 scale Hasegawa Raiden.
