CMK Quick & Easy A-4A/B/C (Early) and A-4C Late and Later Skyhawk Wheels -- 1:72 Scale

vol_2_image

Over the years, there have been a lot of 1:72 scale kits of the A-4 Skyhawk, including the most recent and really excellent new tool Airfix kit to the older but classic families of A-4 kits from Fujimi, Esci, Testors, Hasegawa, and others.  Also, over time, there were plenty of changes to the Skyhawk including quite a few small details such as wheel hub styles.

CMK’s Quick & Easy Line provides two sets of A-4 wheel hubs for the scale modeler in 1:72 scale.  While the sets were designed for the Fujimi A-4s, there’s probably not much if anything stopping you from using them on any other 1:72 scale A-4.

The first set, Q72 307, provides a resin cast nose wheel and the two main wheels.  They are cast each as single pieces.  The main gear wheels feature the spoke-style main wheel hubs and circumferential tread seen on the A-4A, A-4B, and early A-4C.

The second set, Q72 308, provides a resin cast nose wheel and the two main wheels.  They are cast each as single pieces.  The main gear wheels feature bolted-on hubcap style main wheel hubs and circumferential tread seen on the late A-4C and all later Skyhawks.

CMK’s castings, as usual, are flawless and very nicely detailed including all outboard facing hub details and inboard-facing brake assembly.  The casting plug attachment attaches to the tire on the inside of the wheel rather than the bottom, so clean-up won’t take the tire out of round.  These parts also appear to be quite accurate… however…when comparing them to the Fujimi kit wheels, these resin main wheels are slightly but noticeably smaller in diameter.  To me, it’s not clear who has the most accurate and/or correct sizes here.  More research will be needed.  Beyond that, the detail in the CMK Quick & Easy A-4 wheel sets are superior to that of the kit(s) and are a no-brainer when it comes to using them to replace the kit parts.
