AFTERMARKET REVIEW

CMK AF-2/3 Guardian Main Wheels -- 1:48 Scale

The Grumman AF Guardian was the U.S. Navy’s follow-on to the TBF Avenger.  This late 1940s/1950s-era anti-submarine platform was a key player in the post-WWII era.  Special Hobby was the first to produce a mainstream injection-molded kit of this airplane.  It’s a pretty solid quarter-scale representation of the Guardian (see our review of their AF-2W HERE).

In this release from Special Hobby’s Quick & Easy product line, you get replacement cast resin wheels for their AF-2/3.  The tires and inner hub are a single piece while the outer hubs are their own separate parts.  The casting block on the tires is offset about 45 degrees and connect to the tire sidewall.  This is a thoughtful feature since it does not intercept (and thereby interrupt) the very nicely done circumferential tire tread.  The tires also do not feature a noticeable “bulge” in their shape.  They’re well inflated, it would seem.

These Quick & Easy parts are not all that different from the kit wheels, but they do feature tire tread details (absent on the kit parts) that are really quite nicely done.  For me, I consider such a detail to be pretty important.  The original wheels weren’t balloon tires, after all.  Further, the inner wheel hubs are raised as I think they should be.  The kit parts have them sunken or recessed, so this set can be considered as offering a correction to the kit wheels as well.  Overall, these parts accord well with my Grumman Guardian references, and many thanks to Grumman's Bill Barto for sharing his additional Guardian wheel references with me.

Sincere thanks are owed to Special Hobby/CMK for the review sample.  You visit them on the web at http://www.specialhobby.info and on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/specialhobby
