CAF Replica Kate (B5N2) Photo Set:

INTRODUCTION

The Commemorative Air Force restores historical aircraft to flying status.  When Japanese aircraft have been needed for movies and reenactments, replicas have been built by modifying existing aircraft like T-6/SNJ and BT-13 trainers.  Among these are several replica B5N2 Kate carrier attack planes.  These have been used in movies like Tora, Tora, Tora, War and Remembrance, Midway, and others.  Once of these replica Kates is part of the Dixie Wing of the Commemorative Air Force at Peachtree City, Georgia.  Bert Kinzey got to fly in this aircraft several times and experienced what it was like to fly it around the Georgia countryside. Here is a close-up look at the aircraft and some of its details.

This particular replica Kate was displayed along with the Dixie Wing’s other aircraft at Peachtree City’s Falcon Field during World War II Day held on April 4, 2004.  (Detail & Scale Copyright Photo by Bert Kinzey)

A large black torpedo is slung beneath the Kate’s centerline.  While it is not really accurate for a Japanese torpedo, it looks realistic enough when the aircraft is flying.  (Detail & Scale Copyright Photo by Bert Kinzey)

Details of how the torpedo is attached to the underside of the aircraft are revealed in this view.  (Detail & Scale Copyright Photo by Bert Kinzey)

The cockpit is not at all like that of a real Kate.  Rather it has more modern instruments that allow it to fly and navigate more easily with today’s navigational aids.  (Detail & Scale Copyright Photo by Bert Kinzey)

Valves and a map case are on the right side of the front cockpit.  (Detail & Scale Copyright Photo by Bert Kinzey)

Basic metal seats are installed in the cockpits, and full harnesses are provided to strap the pilot and crewman in place.  The aircraft can fly with a pilot and only one crewman in either the middle or aft cockpit.  But unlike the real Kate, three crewmen cannot fly in the replica at the same time due to balance considerations.  (Detail & Scale Copyright Photo by Bert Kinzey)

The canopy sections are very much like that found on the real Kate, and a replica machine gun adds to the appearance of the aircraft.  (Detail & Scale Copyright Photo by Bert Kinzey)

Basic instruments and flight controls are located in the middle cockpit.  The aircraft is easily flown from this cockpit as well as the front.  (Detail & Scale Copyright Photo by Bert Kinzey)

The sides of the middle cockpit are void of details.  The aircraft of the Commemorative Air Force are usually placed in the experimental classification.  (Detail & Scale Copyright Photo by Bert Kinzey)
